It works by going through your internet connection, just like Skype, so it works as well as your internet connection will allow.

There are many phone services you can use through internet connections, etc. The magicjack is using common technology and more infomercials to sell a product that will cost you more than if you get it at walmart (i.e. vonage, skype, w/e)
Don’t get magicjack, it’ll cost you.

It is NOT a scam. I use it my self. You NEED to have very high speed internet connection. I have Cable T.V high speed(5 MB/Sec) which is 3 X faster than DSL/Broadband.
MagicJack is free to call in United States and Canada. It cost me $39 per Year but I believe they have offer out now that gives $59 for 3 years of service.
MagicJack is basically Voice Over IP(VOIP) phone service like Skype. but MJ cost lot less.
I use it to make International call using phone card becuase Cell phones gets charged even 800 No. is dialed during week.

Magic Jack works great and I certainly LOVE mine!
Disregard the comment that says “Don’t get magicjack, it’ll cost you.” Once you get yours, there’s NOTHING else to pay for until $19.95 renewal comes due a full year later. I don’t think Walmart sells them yet.
There is no way I’d buy some special Vonage or Skype enabled phone for over $100 and then be required to extra monthly fees on top of that for Vonage/Skype. $24.95 monthly for same thing when the MagicJack is $20.00 per YEAR? No thanks!

There is a coupon page that tells you where to go to use a “secret 10% off” magic jack discount coupon code that will save you $4.00, although the shipping is an extra 4 pennies. You can’t call to get that price, you have to put into the shopping cart.
Lots of good info in general along with troubleshooting tips for those who have a problem (usually fault of the computer &/or its connection).
If you aren’t sure if your pc and/or connection is fast enough. try the VoIP Quality Test linked there to see if your hardware is ready now. If you get all Green, you’re good to go. Any Yellow and it should work, but quality may not be as good as it could be. Any Red = Bad News.
